The short version
- Your trips, income, expenses and receipt photos are stored on your phone.
- Gigstrak collects location data to enable automatic trip detection and mileage logging, even when the app is closed or not in use. We use it only to record your trips.
- We use Google services to run the app: Firebase for sign-in and app analytics, Google Maps to draw trip maps, and Google Cloud Vision to read receipts you scan.
- We do not sell your personal information and we do not use it for targeted advertising.
- You can delete your account in the app at any time, or ask us to by email.
Who we are
This policy covers the Gigstrak app for Android and the website at gigstrak.com ("Gigstrak", "we", "us"). Questions: privacy@gigstrak.com.
Information we collect
Account information. When you create an account, we receive your email address, your name if you provide one or sign in with Google, and an account identifier. Sign-in is handled by Google Firebase Authentication. If you use a password, Firebase stores it; we never see it.
Records you add. Trips, mileage, income, expenses, notes, the gig platforms you work for, and profile details such as your business name. These are stored on your phone.
Location. Gigstrak collects location data to enable automatic trip detection and mileage logging, even when the app is closed or not in use. If you turn on trip tracking, the app collects your precise location to detect when you start and stop driving, record the route, and calculate distance. With automatic trip detection, this includes location in the background. While a trip is being recorded, Android shows a notification. Route points are stored on your phone. We don't use your location for advertising, and we don't sell it. You can switch to manual trips or turn location access off in your phone's settings at any time.
Trip maps. To show a map of a trip, the app sends that trip's route coordinates to the Google Maps Static API, which returns the map image.
Physical activity. On Android, the app uses your phone's activity recognition (for example, "in a vehicle") to help detect when a drive starts and ends.
Receipt photos. Photos you take or choose to log an expense are stored on your phone. When you scan a receipt, the image is sent to Google Cloud Vision to read the text, such as the amount, date and store name.
App usage. We use Google Firebase Analytics to understand how the app is used: for example, app opens, screens viewed, and actions such as saving a trip or exporting a report, along with the gig platform selected and basic device information (device model, operating system, app version, approximate region). These events are linked to your account identifier. We do not send your trip locations, amounts or receipt contents to analytics. Starting with app version 1.1.0, the app does not collect your device's advertising ID, and we do not use analytics data for advertising.
Purchases. If you subscribe to Gigstrak Premium, the payment is handled by Google Play; we never see your card or payment details. We use RevenueCat to confirm your subscription. RevenueCat receives your Gigstrak account identifier and your purchase history (which plan, when it started, renews or ends) so Premium works on your account. You can manage or cancel your subscription in your Google Play subscriptions.
Website. Our website uses Google Analytics, which sets cookies and collects pages visited, links clicked, approximate location, and browser and device type. The calculators on the website run in your browser; the numbers you enter are not sent to us.
Messages. If you email us, we keep the message and your email address to reply.
How we use information
- To provide the app: record trips, calculate mileage deductions and tax estimates, read receipts, show maps, and create exports.
- To keep your account secure and let you sign in.
- To understand which features are used and fix problems.
- To answer your messages and requests.
- To meet legal obligations.
Cloud backup
Earlier versions of the app offered an optional cloud backup. If you used it, a copy of your trips (including route points), income and expense records, and receipt scan details (the text read from receipts, not the images) is stored in Google Firebase, linked to your account. Cloud backup is not currently offered in the app. We delete any existing backup when you delete your account.
Who we share information with
We share information only with service providers that run parts of Gigstrak for us, and only as needed for that purpose:
- Google Firebase: sign-in, app analytics (without the advertising ID), and stored cloud backups.
- Google Cloud Vision: reading text from the receipt images you scan.
- Google Maps Platform (Maps Static API): drawing trip maps from a trip's route coordinates.
- Google Play: processing Premium subscription payments.
- RevenueCat: confirming subscription purchases and their status.
- Google Analytics: website analytics.
- Amazon Web Services: hosting the website.
Google and RevenueCat process this information under their own privacy policies. We may also disclose information if the law requires it, to protect our rights or users' safety, or as part of a sale or merger of our business. We do not sell your personal information and do not share it for targeted advertising.
How long we keep information
Records on your phone stay there until you delete them, clear the app's data, or uninstall the app. Account information and any cloud backup are kept until you delete your account. Analytics data is kept for a limited period set in our Google Analytics settings. Emails are kept as long as needed to handle your request. Subscription purchase records are kept by Google Play and RevenueCat, linked to your account identifier, and are not removed when you delete your account.
Your choices
- Permissions: you can turn location, physical activity, camera and notification access on or off in your phone's settings. Some features, such as automatic trip detection, won't work without them.
- Export: you can export your trips, transactions and tax summaries from Settings > Export Data.
- Website cookies: you can block cookies in your browser or use Google's Analytics opt-out browser add-on.
- Access, correction and deletion: email privacy@gigstrak.com. Depending on where you live, you may have additional rights under local law; we will respond to requests as that law requires.
Deleting your account
You can delete your account in the app under Settings > Delete account, or ask us to delete it, along with any cloud backup, at any time. See how to delete your account. Data stored only on your phone is removed when you uninstall the app or clear its data. Deleting your account does not cancel a Premium subscription; cancel it in Google Play first. Purchase records held by Google Play and RevenueCat are not deleted with your account.
Security
Information sent between the app, our providers and the website is encrypted in transit (HTTPS). Data on your phone is kept in the app's private storage, which other apps can't read. No method of storage or transmission is completely secure.
Children
Gigstrak is intended for adults. It is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child has given us information, contact us and we will delete it.
Changes to this policy
We will update this page when our practices change and change the effective date above. For significant changes, we will also let you know in the app or by email.
